Hot Chocolate
Rich Homemade Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate is a warm drink made by gently combining milk with chocolate or cocoa. Using chopped chocolate creates a richer texture, while cocoa powder produces a lighter, classic cup.
Ingredients
- 2 cups milk or an unsweetened dairy-free alternative
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar, adjusted to taste
- 2 ounces finely chopped semisweet or dark chocolate
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A small pinch of salt
Method
- Combine the cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and a small splash of milk in a saucepan. Whisk until smooth.
- Add the remaining milk and warm over medium-low heat, stirring regularly. Do not let it boil.
- Add the chopped chocolate and whisk until completely melted.
- Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla, and serve immediately.
Serving Ideas
Top each cup with whipped cream, marshmallows, shaved chocolate, or a light dusting of cocoa powder. Cinnamon, peppermint, or a small pinch of chili can add extra warmth and flavor.
Helpful Tips
- Heat the drink gently to keep the milk from scorching.
- Choose chocolate you enjoy eating, because its flavor will define the finished drink.
- For thicker hot chocolate, use a little more chopped chocolate or replace part of the milk with cream.
- For a dairy-free version, use oat, almond, soy, or coconut milk and confirm that the chocolate contains no dairy.
